Sheets: small but real gain; neutral looks calmer, brows lighter. Best round: FINAL_* are round 4. ## Eyebrow decision: draw the brows over the bangs Yes, for our characters. Both test bodies (and most of our VRoid hair) have bangs that sit on or below the brow line, so with the brows hidden every brow-led expression (angry, sad, surprised, shout, smug) collapsed into the neutral face; the before sheet shows it. The reference rigs can keep their brows under the hair only because their bangs are cut above the brows, i.e. they solve it with the haircut. We can't recut every hairstyle, and our faces are small on screen in the tactics view, where the brow is the strongest single cue. Drawing them over is also a common anime convention. Implementation: the brow mesh's depth is pulled 5 cm toward the camera in the vertex shader (`uFront`), in both the info and colour passes, so it beats the bangs (1-4 cm in front of the forehead) but not the far side of the head at large yaw or anything further out. 3 cm was not enough at 30 degrees. Colour: a deep shade of the character's hair, so blond brows still contrast on blond hair. Risk: a helmet brim within 5 cm of the brow would also be drawn under the brows; not checked (the helmet rows are outside this benchmark's two bodies). ## Still weak - Smug has no one-sided smirk: VRoid has no left/right mouth shapes; it reads as lidded + closed smile. - The woman's bangs still cut across her eyes, so eye-shape changes (angry squint, sad droop) read weaker than in the reference; the brows carry those expressions. - The open-mouth colours come from thresholds on VRoid's mouth map (green channel / brightness); a different VRoid mouth texture could split teeth/tongue differently. - The closed-mouth ink uses a fixed UV window (0.38-0.62 x 0.68-0.84) of the shared VRoid face layout. - Sad uses a small open mouth (MTH_Sorrow) where the reference uses a closed frown. - Brows are still slightly heavy on the woman; nose is still only a faint grey mark. +40:26I finished track A in 4 of the 6 rounds and about 41 minutes (12:43 to 13:24). The code is committed as 5ebe476 on branch bench-a. The final sheets are round 4.
What I changed:
- Brows drawn over the bangs. This is my answer to the open question. On both bodies the bangs hid the brows, so angry, sad, surprised and shout all looked like neutral. The reference rigs avoid this by cutting their bangs above the brows, and we can't recut every hairstyle. I moved the brows 5 cm toward the camera; 3 cm still hid the far brow at 30°. They are coloured a deep shade of the hair with a soft edge.
- Closed mouth. It was a faint line taken from VRoid's face texture. It is now inked, widened and thinner at the corners, so frowns and smiles read at sheet size. This was the biggest single gain.
- Open mouth. It was a flat dark blob. It now shows teeth, tongue and a dark inside, with a lip outline and a shadow under the upper lip.
- Recipes. I split VRoid's whole-face expression presets into separate brow, eye and mouth weights. Open mouths are smaller, surprise is a small round mouth, and angry squints the eyes fully. The recipes are also committed as
review/vroid-02/expr_recipes.txt.
What still reads weakly:
- Smug has no one-sided smirk, because VRoid has no left or right mouth shapes. It reads as half-closed eyes with a closed smile.
- The woman's bangs cross her eyes, so eye-shape changes count for less than in the reference; the brows carry those expressions.
- Sad uses a small open mouth where the reference uses a closed frown.
- The mouth inking assumes the standard VRoid face texture layout, and the teeth and tongue colours depend on VRoid's mouth texture.
- I didn't check helmets: a helmet brim within 5 cm of the brows would be drawn under them.
I also sent this summary to team-lead.
